This is an interesting report from US scientists in which they say caffeine hampers the protein plaques found in Alzheimers sufferers.
The evidence also suggests that caffeine might actually protect against Alzheimers developing in non-sufferers.
Up until now, scientists thought that Alzheimer sufferers could not reverse memory damage from the disease. However, the report suggests that this is not true – there is a certain amount of memory recovery when those with Alzheimers drink at least 5 cups of coffee a day.
Caffeine is safe
Caffeine is, most importantly, a very safe drug for people to take - it enters the brain quickly and the effects of caffeine consumption is quickly felt.
The report warns that people with high blood pressure or pregnant women should not consume that much coffee so this treatment is not recommended for those people.
It’s still early days but the report is promising.
